Although online learning has become very popular over the past decade, the concept of learning across great distances using some form of technology versus traditional classroom learning is not new. Online learning, obviously, uses computer technology to deliver information to learners. This form of learning has been used as long as there has been a world wide web. However, distance learning using correspondence has been documented at least as far back as the early 1700's. In the mid 1800's the University of London began offering complete programs using distance learning. Therefore, using some form of media to learn without having to be physically on-site is a concept which has been shown to be successful for well over a century.
Because of the obvious convenience involved in distance learning, especially using computer technology (i.e., not having to attend classes, affordability, quick and easy access to materials and assessments, and a more flexible learning schedule, among others), not just thousands as is often cited, but actually millions of students take online courses every year.
Park Manor Academy of Psychology's online learning model uses independent study (students follow a prescribed course of learning as directed on their own with no 'face-to-face' contact with an instructor). In addition, limited tutoring is available, but to keep costs down students must be prepared to do most studies on their own. The tutoring model has been used for centuries by quality institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England. Independent distance learning combined with tutoring when needed is the future of education. Students can rest assured that using this model of learning is not a fad, a low-quality alternative, or an unusual approach. At Park Manor Academy of Psychology we use this model of learning every day... successfully.
